Persona 5 (SEGA/Atlus)
A fan cover of the Persona 5 battle theme has gotten the song nominated for a Grammy award.
The 8-Bit Big Band is a jazz/pop group that predominantly arranges and performs covers of songs from video game soundtracks. In November 2023, the group released their album Game Changer, which featured their cover of the Persona 5 battle theme, “Last Surprise.” Now, a year later, their cover has been nominated for a Grammy award alongside the music of well-known celebrities such as John Legend and Willow.
The artists behind The 8-Bit Big Band’s cover are Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman, who created the nominated “Last Surprise” arrangement together. Rosen recently commented on their nomination on his X account, saying, “Just nominated for my fourth Grammy IN A ROW!!! So thrilled to be nominated alongside my harmonic bro in crime [Silverman] for our co-arrangement… LONG LIVE VIDEO GAME MUSIC!!!”
This is surely some exciting news to Persona 5 fans since they would all be familiar with the tune. It is the main battle theme song throughout the 100-plus-hour role-playing game and is also featured in the spin-off games Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight and Persona 5 Strikers.
Fans have long loved the soundtrack for this critically acclaimed role-playing game since it was released in 2016, and The 8-Bit Big Band certainly did an amazing job with its cover. The Grammy Award winner will be announced on Feb. 2, 2025.
