Capcom Plans To Revive Its Dormant Franchises

Capcom’s delve into necromancy could give fans popular games like Dino Crisis back while leaving players with more content from games like Onimusha and Ookami. The gaining giant is expected to release more content based on its archive. An Onimusha trailer was released at The Game Awards in 2024. Fans of the franchise should buckle in for new content.

On Dec. 12, Capcom announced Onimusha Way of the Sword. Then, they added that an Ookami game was in the works, giving hope to gamers in the franchises. Capcom’s last game for the Onimusha was in 2010. The release of Okamiden, a DS spin-off game, was not popular with fans. Before any of that, 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams on PS2 was released. It was considered a significant game for the franchise.

Capcom isn’t stopping there, though. They’ve issued a press release on the revival of both franchises. Onimusha Way of the Sword is set in Edo period Japan and offers fans a different perspective than, say, Ghost of Yotei

“In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” the release said. “The company is working to further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, which includes reviving past IPs like the two titles announced above, to produce highly efficient, high-quality titles continuously.”

Capcom’s Plan For Future Years

Capcom plans to release new content each year going forward. Japanese-themed games have been permeating the gamers here for a while now. Popularity has risen with the consumption of anime and manga, especially during the pandemic period.

Let’s face it, there are teenagers and small kids who love Naruto and Sailor Moon. Some generations have grown up thinking Sailor Moon does indeed naturally have a pink tint to it.

In the same release, Capcom said it is “firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users,” which implies that they might be taking some tips from games released around the pandemic.

Onimusha Way of the Sword will be available in 2026. Capcom hasn’t said what else they intend to revive in the immediate future.
