Could ‘Half-Life 3’ Finally Be Upon Us?

Hold on, don’t leave just yet. We know this sounds like another fruitless rumor that we’ve been hearing for the past few years. We understand that Half-Life 3 is right up there with GTA 6 in being an urban legend of a sequel that has made fans wait for so long; it has become a meme.

However, this update comes in the form of a tweet from gaming insider @Shpeshal_Nick on X. On November 11, this user wrote, “*If* what I was just DMd is actually true (big if), next week GTA 6 could actually have its thunder stolen on the hype scale lmao.”

Concurrently, Valve, the creators of the Half-Life franchise, have announced their new Steam Machine console. This prompted another user to ask @Shpeshal_Nick if they were referring to the Steam Machine announcement. @Shpeshal_Nick responded, “Technically no… No no, I will quote tweet myself one way or another next week because I said next week. I didn’t say ‘some time in the future’ even if it turns out that way.”

This opened the internet to theories that the big announcement was still tied to Valve in some way, and the comparison to GTA 6 led people to believe the reveal was instead the third mainline installment in the Half-Life series.

More hints in this direction can be seen in the official Steam Machine trailer. There is a shot of a keyboard with a very peculiar key indicating the Greek letter lambda. This is particularly relevant because Lambda is one of the icons of the Half-Life franchise.

Another shot in the trailer depicts the Steam Machine decorated with stickers, and one of them is very reminiscent of the Half-Life logo. Adding to the mystique, a sticker is plastered over the alleged Half-Life logo that reads “censored.” The final cherry on top is that there is a huge sticker directly above it that reads “SOON.”

It is common practice in the gaming industry to use console-exclusive games to launch new platforms. Valve, itself, released Half-Life: Alyx alongside their premier Steam VR headset. It is also common practice to use The Game Awards to announce major games; since the show is next month, it is not outside the realm of possibility that Valve is waiting until then to announce Half-Life 3.

We could have finally cracked the code or this could be another rumor that serves no purpose besides getting our hopes up. Still, if there is some truth to @Shpeshal_Nick’s post, the question remains: what news could they possibly be talking about that “steals the thunder” of GTA 6? Either way, we’ll just have to wait to find out.
