When was the last time any of us thought about the 2004 game Doom 3? Sony was determined to make the answer to that question “Today!” when they announced Wednesday Doom 3 will be coming to PlayStation VR via the PlayStation 4 and 5 on March 29.
Sony explains in a blog post that the upcoming port of the almost 17-year-old game will allow players to use the PlayStation Aim controller to simulate holding a gun. Players can now physically lean to peer around corners, line up their shots and take advantage a of 360 degree space for active play.
Doom 3: VR Edition will feature all previous DLC from the 2004 game like Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission.
While Wednesday’s announcement may sound like the farthest left field fly-ball from Sony in a while, it’s actually right up the alley of developer ID Software, owned by Bethesda. Bethesda and ID have released nearly all of their recent first-person games like Fallout 4, Skyrim, and even Doom (2016) for VR play. It was only a matter of time until Bethesda and ID dug into their backlog to revive some classic first-person shooters for virtual reality.
