With the trailer released at ComicCon in San Diego, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves looks ready to reboot and revitalize an old movie trilogy, aiming for a release next year on March 3.
For too long, Dungeons and Dragons has had a less-than-stellar reputation. With a franchise fraught with mediocre movies, the real appeal of the game slipped under most people’s radar. Nowadays, the game’s reputation seems to be rising, with appearances in hit shows like Stranger Things and inspiring animated adaptations such as The Legend of Vox Machina.
Scheduled for release in 2023 by Paramount Pictures, Honor Among Thieves boasts an impressive cast. The film, boasting actors from Star Trek, Avatar and even Detective Pikachu, has fans excited to see what they’ll bring to the table.
The D&D culture can be seen in the trailer, such as the fantastic spellcasting, the Holy Avenger sword, Owlbears and, of course, Dragons. We see one of the main characters shape into a druid. In a later scene, fans witness one of the thieves barely escape from a mimic, a carnivorous shapeshifter in the form of a treasure chest. For the average person, these are just adrenaline-raising action scenes. For D&D players such as myself, the trailer brings the classic and quintessential D&D moments to life.
Set in the Forgotten Realms of the D&D universe, the movie has a plethora of different stories to draw from. The Forgotten Realms has received a number of adaptations, from the Baldur’s Gate series, Neverwinter Nights and the multitude of official D&D stories set there. This gives Honor Among Thieves a wide variety of content to adapt and take inspiration from. Fans have speculated whether or not the movie will be an adaptation of Mask of the Dragon Queen or Rise of Tiamat, both classic Dungeons and Dragons modules.
While the previous trilogy found little success, fans wait and hope for a true Dungeons and Dragons story to make headway on the big screen.
