‘Fallout’ Remaster Remains In Limbo, Leaving Fans Uncertain

The critically acclaimed Fallout franchise’s fandom didn’t show up for the Fallout remake due to burnout, a serious problem affecting the industry worldwide.

“I can’t imagine what having to model and write and code an entire mod overhaul for a game engine would do,” said longtime Fallout franchise fan Erick Adams. Adams expressed a desire for a remaster: “It’s a labor of love I’d have liked to have seen.”

A remaster of the popular first game would have pleased fans, but now the project is over.

PC Gamer reported the following statement from the team behind the remaster, “Vault 13 was suspended due to a combination of factors, including burnout, life changes, difficulty in recruiting and retaining team members with niche skills, and personal life changes among core team members.”

The post-apocalyptic world franchise allows players to think critically about options and interact. Its popularity led to a series of memes, fan gear, cosplays, mods and a huge following.

Adams said he was worried some of the charm would be lost on transitioning from 2D isometric CRPG to 3D action adventure, affecting gameplay. He watched the trailer excitedly and planned to look into the remake. “I was made aware of the remake recently, but I was excited to see how they handled the path of the Chosen and the story that unfolds for them,” said Adams.

Vault 13 posted teasers on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this year. They were intending to release it, but they ended up shelving the project. The account is now defunct for updates, and the Discord server no longer has a functioning invitation. The contact email is still posted, leaving an open line of communication.

Vault 13’s X account posted a screenshot from their Discord statement detailing their intention to release all unfinished content for players in the hope that someone else would take up the project.

While fans are left uncertain about the fate of Fallout 1, Project Arroyo continues with Fallout 2, leaving hope for gamers everywhere. Project Arroyo plans to remake Fallout 2 using Fallout 4’s creation engine—the ambitious company of 100 people plans to continue its work. The Gamer reported that some modders had left Vault 13 to join after the project was halted.
