‘Final Fantasy IX Picture Book’ About Vivi Set For May 2026 Release

Square Enix is set to release a new illustrated picture book set in the world of Final Fantasy IX. Set to release on May 19, 2026, Final Fantasy IX Picture Book: Vivi and Grandpa’s Memories for the Sky is going to expand the story of one of the game’s most beloved characters. The book will focus on Black Mage Vivi.

The story takes place before the events of the original game, following the lives of Vivi and his adoptive grandfather, Quan. The story begins when Quan finds Vivi washed ashore and decides to raise him. The book lets you experience the peaceful life they had together before Vivi leaves home to start his own journey.

The story is written by Kazuhiko Aoki, an event designer on the original game, with the artwork done by Toshiyuki Itahana, the character designer behind Final Fantasy IX. The involvement of these two with the book connects it to the game’s original creative team.

The book will be a hardcover illustrated book with around 44-48 pages.

The new picture book provides an opportunity for readers to learn about Vivi’s background (childhood), which is part of how he is portrayed as one of the most memorable characters from the original Final Fantasy IX video game.

Since the release of the video game, Vivi’s emotional storyline has influenced many fans of the series. As a result, he is also one of the most well-known characters in the Final Fantasy series. In the original video game, Vivi’s storyline was about finding out who he is, why he exists, and what it means to be alive. This new format will give readers a deeper understanding of Vivi’s life before the events of the game.

Originally launched in 2000, Final Fantasy IX is often celebrated for going back to its roots after several futuristic projects. The picture book will help build the game’s legacy and celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary. Fans will get the chance to revisit the world of Gaia and learn more about its most iconic characters.
