‘Final Fantasy VII’ Gets The Remake Treatment, Here’s What We Know

Square Enix is pulling out all the stops to continue to please Final Fantasy fans. In celebrating the Final Fantasy VII anniversary last week, the studio announced that the prequel spin-off Crisis Core will get a remake in the coming months.

The remake is titled Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion and will focus on the character Zack Fair who died in the sequel (spoiler alert), and his ties with Cloud Strife and Aerate Gainsborough. The game was initially released on the PSP in 2007 and gave players a glimpse into Zack’s backstory and the events preceding Final Fantasy VII, before of course ripping him away from the narrative in the most devastating fashion.

Game director Hajime Tabata said it was his devastating death that inspired the premise of the game, “The dramatic irony of Zack’s predetermined fate was the primary reason he was chosen to be the title’s protagonist. The most rewarding thing for me was crafting the story of Zack’s life into a tale of succession and legacy that, through the Buster Sword, provides a heraldic segue into Final Fantasy VII.”

There has been one trailer for Crisis Core, but the new features are apparent. The new game features impressive new visuals compared to the original and combat has been completely redone, now, featuring fluid real-time combat, instead of the RPG-style combat in the 2007 release.

The game will not be available in its original PSP form but rather in a more updated PS4, PS5 and PC format, There hasn’t been a concrete release date for Crisis Core, however, Square Enix said it will be playable this winter. Given that Zack Fair will play a huge part in 2023’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, it seems right that the game would release so soon.
