Fortnite’s September 17 Update Unlocks 13 New Sprites, With More on the Way

Fortnite players have 13 new Sprites to chase following the game’s September 17 update, even though the patch quietly added far more content to the game’s files than is currently available to unlock.

The update, version 42.20, added 42 new Sprites in total, according to a review of the game’s files. However, Epic Games is rolling out the additions in stages, and only 13 are obtainable as of the September 17 release. The remainder — including a Morgana Sprite tied to Persona 5, a Birthday-themed Sprite, and most of a new set of Bounty Hunter variants — should be unlockable next week.

Among the 13 Sprites available now are three entirely new characters: Crash Bandicoot, Blinky from Pac-Man, and a character called Pond. Each of the three comes with a full set of collectible variants — a base version, along with Gold, Loot Hacker, and Cheat Master tiers — bringing the complete list of newly unlockable Sprites to:

  • Crash Bandicoot Sprite
  • Gold Crash Bandicoot Sprite
  • Loot Hacker Crash Bandicoot Sprite
  • Cheat Master Crash Bandicoot Sprite
  • Blinky Sprite
  • Gold Blinky Sprite
  • Loot Hacker Blinky Sprite
  • Cheat Master Blinky Sprite
  • Pond Sprite
  • Gold Pond Sprite
  • Loot Hacker Pond Sprite
  • Cheat Master Pond Sprite
  • Bounty Hunter Crown Sprite

The new Sprites went live at 3 a.m. PT (6 a.m. ET) on September 17. Notably, Epic Games made them available immediately after the patch released rather than waiting for the game’s usual daily Sprite reset, meaning players who had already downloaded the update could start unlocking the new characters right away.

How to Get the Bounty Hunter Crown Sprite

Most new Sprites can be earned through standard gameplay, but the Bounty Hunter Crown Sprite has an additional requirement. To unlock it, players must first fully master the Loot Hacker Crown Sprite by winning at least one match while using it. Once a player reaches the Loot Hacker variant’s maximum level, the Bounty Hunter Crown Sprite is automatically added to their collection.

Bounty Hunter-tier Sprites function differently from other variants in Fortnite‘s Sprite system: rather than earning experience through general gameplay, they gain Sprite XP specifically from eliminating opponents, unless the underlying Sprite has its own unique leveling requirement.

What’s Still to Come

While most of the September 17 update’s new content is now playable, Epic Games has signaled that the rollout isn’t complete. The Morgana Sprite, Birthday Sprite, and the remaining Bounty Hunter variants that were added to the game’s files alongside Tuesday’s patch are expected to become available to players sometime next week, though Epic has not announced an exact release date or the specific unlock requirements for that next wave.

The staggered release continues a pattern Epic Games has used in past updates, spacing out new content drops even when it adds all the underlying assets at once.
