Maker of ‘Fall Guys,’ Tonic Games Group, Acquired By Epic Games

In a move similar to their purchase of Psyonix Games in 2019, Epic Games has outright bought Tonic Games Group, the maker of the 2020 smash-hit Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.

In a blog post to the Epic Games website, leaders from both companies commended the merge and assured fans that nothing would change from their already existing Fall Guys experience.

“At Tonic Games Group we often say that “everyone deserves a game that feels like it was made for them. With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us,” wrote Dave Bailey, CEO and co-founder of Tonic Games. “They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team.”

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney seconded Bailey writing, “It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal. As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”

When Epic Games acquired Psyonix, very little changed within their flagship game Rocket League. Players from competing online distributor Steam, however, couldn’t access the game without logging into an Epic Games account which infuriated many Steam players. Epic Games also worked to change Rocket League‘s random loot-box paid item system in exchange for one where players knew what digital item they would receive in the in-game store.

Fall Guys players on Steam may be in for a rude awakening in the coming months as the game swaps over to an Epic property. Fall Guys does not have a random loot-box paid item system, so Epic Games most likely won’t tinker with the already existing in-game store.
