Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Is Finally Happening — And It’s Filming in Ancient Rome

The long-awaited Assassin’s Creed series has begun production in Rome, Italy, for Netflix. This is the first series under the Netflix and Ubisoft partnership. This deal has been in the works since 2020. Filming is mainly taking place at the famous Cinecittà Studios.

The series is set in Rome in A.D. 64, a period marked by the reign of Emperor Nero, imperial power and political conspiracy. The story is original and not directly adapted from a specific game, making it a fresh appearance for existing and new fans.

The show is set to be a high-octane thriller built upon a secret war between two factions. One of them is the Assassin Brotherhood, whose main goal is to preserve free will, while the Templar Order is looking to control humanity’s future. The series will follow different characters as they battle each other to shape humanity.

The creative team behind it all includes co-showrunners and executive producers Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming). Directing the series is Emmy Award-winning director Johan Renck, best known for Chornobyl on HBO. This gives the show significant credibility with Renck behind the camera.

The series features a large cast, including Toby WallaceLola PetticrewZachary HartLaura MarcusTanzyn CrawfordNabhaan Rizwan and Claes Bang. To add to this list of regular cast members with recurring appearances on the show are Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris and Corrado Invernizzi. To further round out the large ensemble of actors in the cast, four new recurring cast member additions have been made to join them: Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (Foundation; The Rain), Youssef Kerkour (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Mirren Mack (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Louis McCartney (Stranger Things: The First Shadow).

Assassin’s Creed is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, with over 230 million units sold. The series will be released sometime in 2027, with filming scheduled to run for seven months starting in October 2026.
