‘Pokémon Detective Pikachu’ Is Performing Fine Commercially Despite Being Overshadowed By ‘Avengers: Endgame’

Pokémon Detective Pikachu failed to defeat Avengers: Endgame at the box office (nor will it), but Nintendo’s electric gumshoe is preforming well nevertheless.

Back in March, Detective Pikachu was projected to have a domestic opening weekend of $75 to $90 million. But, likely in part to Endgame‘s overwhelming success, it instead settled at around $54.3 million on its premiere weekend.

While it underperformed in comparison to its expectations, Detective Pikachu is still performing fine. It currently holds the title of being this year’s fifth-highest grossing movie on its opening weekend, and with Disney’s Aladdin slated to release on May 24, there’s still time for the good detective to stretch his legs before the summer film rush begins. Detective Pikachu‘s current domestic total is at $63.404 million.

Unfortunately for Warner Bros., Legendary and the Pokémon Company, their cinematic collaboration has already released in all major markets, including China. Detective Pikachu reportedly had a production budget of $150 million, meaning its break even point would be about double of that. Its current gross – $166.7 million – has yet to hit that mark, but it’s on the way.

It’s currently hard to parse how the three companies will plot out sequels to Pokémon Detective Pikachu, but we know there are plans for at least one continuation.
