Recent Leaks Suggest ‘The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’ Remake Will Release This Year

Leaks have come out regarding an upcoming remake of Bethesda’s 2006 RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and apparently, we’ll be seeing it soon.

Last week, the gaming news source MP1st reported details about the unannounced remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This information was supposedly released accidentally by a former employee of Virtuos, a video game support studio. Perhaps the most surprising detail of this potential remake is that the game would use Unreal Engine 5. This indicates that this would be less of a remake and more of a full-on remastered edition of the game. This is because Unreal Engine 5 allows for significant changes to gameplay.

According to the leak, these gameplay changes would apply to Archery, Blocking, Stamina, Sneak, Hit Reaction and the heads-up display (HUD). These improvements were reportedly made with current action games and Soulslikes RPGs in mind, as the original game mechanics were too “frustrating” and “boring” to play with. With these changes, triggering the knockdown that results from Stamina being depleted would be harder. Also, the icons for Sneak would be highlighted, and the damage calculations would be improved. The HUD would be completely redesigned to make it easier for players to understand. Hit reactions would be added to make it clear damage is being taken, and the Archery feature would be visible to players from both a first and third-person point of view.

However, these recent leaks are not the first we hear of an Oblivion remake. In 2023, documents containing lists for upcoming games were published during the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial over Activision Blizzard being bought out. This resulted in a decent-sized list of unannounced Bethesda games that are due to be released in the following years. This list was put together back in July 2020 and listed “Oblivion Remaster” to be released in “Financial year 2022.” Obviously, this did not happen. Until now, this was about as much information available about an Oblivion remake. The list also showed “The Elder Scrolls 6” to be released in “Financial year 2024,” which, again, did not happen.

One thing we do know, according to the leaks at least, is that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake is in the works and is set to release this year. This raises the question about which console the game would be released on. Microsoft would be an obvious choice, but with the Nintendo Switch 2 releasing in the summer of this year, it’s possible that Nintendo would want a piece of the Oblivion pie as well.
