Jagex has scrapped RuneScape Reignited, a planned fresh-start experience for its long-running MMO, less than two weeks after unveiling it.
The studio announced the cancellation on Thursday, Oct. 15, in a YouTube video and accompanying blog post, after the project drew heavy criticism from the game’s veteran player base.
In the video, Mod Ryan, RuneScape‘s creative director, thanked players for their feedback and acknowledged the studio missed the mark with the proposal.
He compared the situation to one of the game’s most controversial moments: the 2012 Evolution of Combat update, which overhauled RuneScape’s combat system and split the community. Ryan said the game took more than a decade to recover from that divisive change, and that Jagex didn’t want to risk repeating it.
He also apologized to players who had been looking forward to starting fresh with Reignited.
Announced on Oct. 3 at RuneFest 2026, Reignited wasn’t a standalone game but a new character type within RuneScape, set to launch on Dec. 2. The idea was to let new and returning players experience the game from a clean slate, as if it were a brand-new MMO release.
Reignited characters would have played alongside existing veteran players on the same worlds, but with their own separate economy, including a Grand Exchange marketplace limited to other Reignited players. They couldn’t trade or join boss encounters with veterans, and they would have their own HiScores, with the first players to reach certain milestones honored with statues in a new Hall of Legends.
The mode also promised a progression system free of paid advantages. Reignited players would have been blocked from buying Radiant Stars from the game’s Marketplace, a nod to longtime frustration over RuneScape‘s microtransactions.
Many veteran players viewed Reignited as a threat to their existing accounts. Critics worried the split economy would divide the player base and leave long-established characters feeling sidelined as Jagex focused on attracting newcomers.
Jagex had hoped the mode would also bring lapsed players back to RuneScape 3, but the backlash made it clear that much of the existing community didn’t share that vision.
The cancellation does not affect the rest of the Dec. 2 update. Jagex will still release a new Adventure Guide and the first part of a remastered introductory journey.
The studio will also offer a 10-day free trial of members’ content from Dec. 2 to Dec. 12 for new characters and accounts that have not had an active membership since June 2. The promotion does not apply to Old School RuneScape.
Jagex said its 2027 roadmap, also revealed at RuneFest, remains on track, adding that the debate over Reignited had overshadowed it. The roadmap promises to rebuild the game with its core community in mind, and the studio has pledged not to split game worlds.
RuneScape 4, a separate new MMO also announced at RuneFest, is unaffected by the decision.
