On Monday, it was discovered that SEGA filed a trademark for “NIGHTS DREAM WHEEL” in Japan.
Longtime SEGA fans are hopeful this new trademark pertains to the NiGHTS series. Originally released in July 1996, NiGHTS into Dreams… was Sonic Team’s seminal score attack game for the SEGA Saturn, an artistic achievement in this medium that sadly never achieved commercial success. It was imperfectly ported to the PlayStation 2 in 2008, which in turn was later ported to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2012. The series did score one direct sequel, 2007’s middling NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams for the Wii.
Whether this trademark will amount to a proper third NiGHTS installment, a pachinko machine, or something else is currently unknown, but SEGA’s openly expressed interest in reviving dormant properties. Back in May 2017, SEGA affirmed reviving legacy IPs was something the company was aiming to do, and that sentiment was echoed upon the launch of the SEGA Forever program. Earlier this month, SEGA formally announced the return of Super Monkey Ball through an updated re-release of Banana Blitz. Perhaps SEGA’s anomalous acrobat will soar the skies again?
