Sonic Mania Plus (SEGA)
Last week, Nintendo announced a load of games and content for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Brothers, and SEGA seems to be on course to do the same with their mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. Despite having one of the biggest movies of 2020, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has mostly been quiet for the last few years. After 2017’s critically acclaimed Sonic Mania and the disappointing Sonic Forces, SEGA’s little blue mascot hasn’t had much in the way of a traditional game released. He’s co-starred with his former rival Mario in Smash Brothers and the Olympic Games, but the only other Sonic game that fans got in the past few years was 2019’s Team Sonic Racing.
However, that seems to be changing for 2021 with SEGA pulling out all the stops for the franchise’s 30th anniversary. In a two-page ad spread in Licensing Source Book Europe, SEGA will have “a year of celebration” for the Blue Blur’s 30th birthday, including new games, new digital content events, major announcements and “a tailored licensing program.” Currently, SEGA has yet to release any information regarding Sonic’s upcoming anniversary.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released in theaters earlier this year, racking in over $300 million at the box office. It has since become the highest-grossing video game movie in America.
