Sony Allows PS4 Cross-Platform Multiplayer To All Developers

Console gaming is going to get much more open as Sony lets developers create their games with cross-platform multiplayer. It’s been a long time coming for the only console creators left to be so reluctant to allow this feature on their system.

For a while, Sony didn’t like the idea of letting people play their PS4 titles with their friends on other platforms. It tried a cross-play beta with Fortnite a little over a year ago, and is now allowing all devs to make use of cross-platform capabilities.

Over the last year, games like Rocket League, Dauntless, Paladins, Realm Royale, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds all enabled cross-play with other consoles. Later this month Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will also be released with cross-platform play enabled.

This isn’t mentioning other important titles such as Disc Jam, EVE: Valkyrie, Final Fantasy XIV, and Street Fighter V also releasing with cross-platform play as well.

While many used it, Sony allowing any and all games to access this feature is an important step in the building of a generation where the “console war” is null and void. Playing with your friends on any system has never been easier with this new change.

Sony made no real announcement for this, rather mentioning it as a small detail when talking about their ambitious aspirations with cloud gaming and PS Now.

There are quite a few games, such as Minecraft and Roblox, that offer cross-play with non-PS4 platforms, so it is currently unknown how this will be handled in the near future.

This happening so late in the PS4’s lifespan is curious, but will set a new precedent for the next console generation. When the newest consoles come out there won’t be any restrictions between major companies when it comes to cross-platform play, which is great for the players.
