Though a new console generation started a few months ago, it’s been challenging to get your hands on either the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. Between scalpers buying up systems to companies limiting how many systems brick-and-mortar retailers can get them, you’ll have to hassle to get the latest systems. Despite all these issues, Sony is discontinuing specific PS4 models.
While the company originally didn’t make any official statement over the weekend, a Japanese Twitter user’s tweet seemingly confirmed that Sony would be ending production on certain PS4 systems. The image below shows a note next to a handful of systems that says, “due to the manufacturer ending production, the following products will not be restocked.” The PS4 systems that will no longer be available are listed are as follows: 500 GB glacier white PS4, 1 TB jet black and glacier white PS4, 2 TB jet black PS4 and the 1TB glacier white PS4 Pro.
After the rumors broke over the weekend, the Japanese gaming website GameWatch contacted Sony. The company confirmed that it would discontinue production of all PS4s, save for the PS4 Slim 500 gig model. The reason is so that the company can keep up with the high demand for the PS5. As of this writing, it is only confirmed for Japan. You’ll still be able to buy a PS4 and PS4 Pro at your local retailer for now, though it is unknown how long that will last.
It also reported that the PS4 Pro had been discontinued in Japan as early as September 2020. Sony has also left a comment for Famitsu: “We will continue to ship the standard PS4 and continue to focus on our business with PS4 software and peripherals. We have not disclosed details regarding our production lines, but we have switched our production focus to PS5.”
The PS4 was first released on November 15, 2013, with both the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro launching on November 7, 2016.
