Super Mario RPG director Chihiro Fujioka would like to make a follow-up to his cult classic title as his last title before retirement, he told MinnMax.
“So, in my career I’ve been involved in a lot of games and you know, I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible,” he said. “I think Mario & Luigi is cool but I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario.”
When asked whether he has any story ideas, he replied: “That is a secret.”
Super Mario RPG was originally launched in 1996 on the Super Nintendo. The game was supposed to receive a sequel, which was believed to be canceled because of disagreements between Nintendo and Square, who made the first game. The scrapped sequel was eventually turned into Paper Mario, which became the more well-known spiritual successor to the original.
Despite the game not getting much attention from Nintendo, it still has a loyal following that hopes to see a sequel get made.
Square Enix currently holds the rights to the Super Mario RPG franchise but has been bringing many of its titles over to the Nintendo Switch, making a possible collaboration between the two companies not outside the realm of possibility.
