The Legend of Zelda has been garnering massive attention from social media and gaming communities despite Nintendo saying nothing about any news or a new game. So what’s behind all the sudden buzz across all the different social media feeds, forums and streaming platforms?
2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the original franchise, which launched in 1986. Fans have been quite nostalgic about the milestone and have started revisiting past games, ranking the classics. The original Legend of Zelda was a pioneer of open-world gaming and has been a massive influence on game design.
Another major factor in the buzz has been the live-action Legend of Zelda film, set for release on May 7, 2027. Directed by Wes Ball and produced in partnership with Sony, the film is currently in production. With the huge success of both the Mario movies, expectations for the film are significantly elevated.
The most speculative rumors concern a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Reports from both insider NateTheHate (with additional reporting by Video Games Chronicle) indicate that a remake could be released for the next-generation version of Nintendo’s Switch console later this year (in late 2026). Although Nintendo has not confirmed the alleged remake, the timing of the rumored release, which coincides with the game’s anniversary, increases the likelihood that it is true.
There has never been a better time to jump into the Zelda universe. Classic 2D Zelda titles and several 3D entries are available through Nintendo Switch Online right now. Whether you are new to the series or a longtime fan, the perfect time to explore what the series has to offer is now.
