‘Yakuza’ Game Series To Be Turned Into A Movie

Kazuya Kiryu and the rest of the crazy cast of the Yakuza series will be getting the live-action treatment as a movie based on SEGA’s Yakuza franchise is currently in development. SEGA is working with 1212 Entertainment (Scare Stories to Tell in the Dark) and Wild Sheep Content to bring the series to life, with Erik Barmack, Roberto Grande and Joshua Long (1983) serving as producers. Currently, the two studios are in the process of looking for a writer for the project.

Yakuza offers us a new playground in which to set compelling stories with complex characters in a unique environment that audiences have rarely seen before,” a spokesperson for 1212 told Variety. “The saga of Kazuma Kiryu has a built-in cinematic appeal – a mix of kinetic action with bursts of comedy, multiple converging storylines and a gripping journey towards redemption.”

Barmack added, “With our background in telling global stories, we are excited to bring this huge project to global platforms.”

Starting life on the PS2 in 2005, Yakuza has sold millions of copies worldwide, becoming one of SEGA’s best-selling franchises. The last game from SEGA to receive a live-action movie was Sonic the Hedgehog with his 2020 movie of the same name. The film grossed over $300 million at the box office and is one of 2020’s highest-grossing films.
