The seventh patch for the video game RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 has been out since September, and just recently, the developers, Larian, announced that there have been 50 million mod downloads since then.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a role-playing video game released in 2023. It is inspired by the classic Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game and has been a hit with fans since its release, receiving a 10/10 rating from both IGN and Steam.
With the game’s established popularity, fans were excited for Patch 7 when it was released in Sept. When Larian announced the update, they posted on their official website that Patch 7 would include “new evil ending cinematics, along with Honour Mode improvements and new Legendary Actions, split screen improvements, a new way to mod your game, and a whole bunch of gameplay improvements and bug fixes.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 players have clearly been enjoying themselves with the new mod feature, seeing as they collectively downloaded an astonishing 50 million game mods in less than 3 months of Patch 7’s release.
This new mod feature allows players to create their own mods using a new in-game Mod Manager and a modding Toolkit. Players can then publish the mods they create so that other players can download them to use in their game. In their post, Larian says that these tools should improve compatibility and accessibility, but aside from these practical uses, fans are downright having fun with these mods.
One humorous example is that 10,000 of those 50 million mod downloads were made to change one in-game character’s name from Withers to “Bone Daddy” due to the character’s undead and skeletal appearance.
Another nonsensical way players have been modding the game is by comically changing the characters’ appearances. For example, giving Withers, the undead “keeper of records,” a pair of breasts. To their credit, Larian seems to be entertained with these creative mods and commented on them in an X post by saying “So, uh, glad we could facilitate that.”
