The days are getting longer and so are the load times as Call of Duty Warzone announced that more than 100 million players worldwide have clicked into the free-to-play war-crime simulator.
Maybe calling Call of Duty a war-crime simulator is a bit harsh, but if Fifa 22‘s campaign is a corruption simulator, then I think the title fits. The official Call of Duty twitter page announced the new milestone Monday saying, “Thank you all for dropping in. It wouldn’t be Warzone without you.”
Call of Duty and I grew apart at the same time Linkin Park and I did, but their newest game’s player count is impossible to ignore. From what I understand, Warzone is another riff on the cult-hit movie Battle Royale starring the actual king of the planet Earth Takeshi Kitano, or “Beat” Takeshi if you’re tough enough.
Now, instead of centering on an authoritarian government and the chuugakusei damned to fight to the death in a new world order, it’s about hunky soldier guys shooting each other because video games.
Admittedly, Warzone has the leg up on other gritty Battle Royale-inspired games like Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds which I am unfortunately more acquainted with. Swept up in the early hype of PUBG, I was just as swiftly swept out because of the game’s dreadfully clunky controls; some may call them “tactical,” but I call them stiff. Call of Duty Warzone seemingly uses that same refined engine as the series’ recent games, so I’m guessing it ought to be the game of choice for people who want to play the shooty-shooty game.
