District 10 will have a basis in American History, according to director Neil Blomkamp. The film was recently announced to have entered the writing process in February 2021.
Blomkamp explained that the work on the script is continuing at a steady pace. “That script continues to be written. It’s looking good. It took a decade to figure out, to come up with a reason why to make that film as opposed to just make a sequel” Blomkamp told IGN. “There was a topic in American history that the second I realized that that fit into the world of District 9, it felt like an awesome way to do a sequel. So yeah, it continues to be developed and it’s getting a lot closer”.
District 10 is the sequel to District 9 which was released in 2009. District 9 was set in South Africa and drew heavily from the nation’s history of apartheid. In the film, aliens come to earth to seek refuge. On earth, they are cordoned off into an area called District 9, which is located in South Africa. The film was celebrated by fans and critics alike, who appreciated the action, emotion and imagination of the movie.
Blomkamp tweeted on February 26 to announce that District 10 was in the process of being written. In this tweet, he announced that Sharlto Copley and Terri Tatchell will co-write the screenplay for the film. Blomkamp, Copley and Tatchell previously worked on District 9 together. Blomkamp is also responsible for films such as Elysium and Chappie.
Blomkamp was also named the chief visionary officer at Gunzilla Games in July of 2021. He will oversee the development of a new shooter game from the studio. Blomkamp also created a horror movie called Demonic that will be available on August 20. The film was made in relative secrecy, but we know it will have prominent sci-fi elements and visual effects.
