A rumor about the upcoming Black Panther video game reveals a mechanic that would change the future of Marvel video games forever.
Back in July 2023, EA announced that a Black Panther game was in the works in collaboration with Marvel and Cliffhanger Games. Despite the time that has passed since this announcement, there have not been many major updates on the game’s development and, as it is, there is still no official release date for the game.
Because of the lack of information, many fans have taken to the internet to dig up what they can, which has, of course, led to many rumors about what gamers might expect to see when the game finally launches. One of those rumors reveals a concept so clever that if it isn’t true, EA might want to go back and add it in.
Fans have speculated that in the game, players might be able to actually choose who the Black Panther will be among a cast of existing Black Panther characters. This would include obvious candidates such as T’challa or Shuri, but players might also be able to give the Black Panther title to M’Baku or Killmonger. Needless to say, if this rumor is true, that would make for a Marvel game with a truly endless list of possibilities.
This mechanic could also completely revolutionize Marvel games moving forward. Within the Marvel canon, there are a lot of hero titles that have been filled by multiple people or passed down from one person to the next. Imagine a Captain America game where you could choose between Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, or even Bucky Barnes.
The addition of this mechanic would make Marvel games so much more rich and complex, but that would also mean that production on them might take a much longer time. If you ask me though, it would be so worth it to wait on a game with so much variety. The fact that the 2023 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game allows you to play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales offers some hope that this is more than just a rumor.
