Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon recently stated that he will retire. He was heavily criticized for his contributions to Donald Trump and other controversial politicians.
Users of Twitter discovered his donations around a week ago. They were listed on a site called Open Secrets, which revealed that he had financially supported representatives such as Sen. Mitch McConnel (R-Kentucky) and President Trump. He also donated to Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat who was panned for proposing a bill that would prevent transgender females from competing in women’s athletic competition. These discoveries thus sparked the backlash against Cawthon, especially from fans in the LGBTQ+ community.
Cawthon did not comment on the matter at first. He then posted on Reddit, defending his actions. In his post, he stated that “[he] supported President Trump because [he] felt he was the best man to fuel a strong economy and stand up to America’s enemies abroad.” Cawthon also stated that “Even if there were candidates who had better things to say to the LGBT community directly, and bigger promises to make, I believed that their stances on other issues would have ended up doing much greater harm to those communities than good.” Cawthon also identified himself as a “Republican Christian” and a supporter of the pro-life movement.
Cawthon commented on his retirement through his website; scottgames.com. “I’ve had a blessed, fulfilling, and rich career,” he said. “I’ve tried to make some good games (let the debate ensue), and I’ve witnessed the creation of possibly the most creative and talented fanbase on the planet.”
Cawthon says that he will now look to spend more time with his kids, including making games for them. Cawthon also claimed to have received support from members of the LGBTQ+ community during the past week.
Cawthon promised, however, that Five Nights at Freddy’s is not over. “Someone else will eventually be running the show,” he said. “Someone of my choosing and someone that I trust.”
