‘Ghost Recon: Wildlands’ Gets Major Free Update Nearly A Decade After Launch

Ubisoft released a substantial free update for Ghost Recon: Wildlands on Thursday, timed to the franchise’s 25th anniversary and built largely around feedback the studio gathered from players who’ve kept the nearly decade-old title active long after its original 2017 launch.

The update, called Last Rites, brings the game up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC — a long-requested technical upgrade for a title originally built for previous-generation hardware.

Beyond the visual bump, Ubisoft Bordeaux added a new linear story mission set in a darker, more oppressive rendering of Bolivia, where players confront Los Penitentes, a cult built around a masked antagonist named La Llorona.

According to Creative Director Olivier Leonardi, the character was designed as a wounded, complex figure whose quest for vengeance against Bolivia’s corrupt government and its armed wing stems from betrayal by people she once trusted, giving the new content a heavier narrative tone than the base game’s cartel-focused story.

Much of the update’s design was shaped directly by a segment of the community Ubisoft internally dubbed “Sandbox Players” — people who used Wildlands’ open-world systems for immersive role-play rather than straightforward mission completion.

Live Strategy & Analytics Director Yossef Benzeghadi said the team spent years studying that behavior, and Last Rites translates it into new customization tools: adjustable “Ghost Parameters” covering things like instant death, revive limits and ammo retention, plus new World and Session Settings letting players control weather, time of day, enemy patrol rates and even friendly fire for light PvP scenarios among friends.

The update also restores previously unreleased or unobtainable content, including cosmetic camos, all Ghost War PvP classes unlocked for free, and the return of a Predator-themed mission. PlayStation Plus members get additional exclusive items, including a La Llorona-themed skin and a new weapon and sunglasses accessory.

Completing the Last Rites mission also unlocks a special Character Smith operator skin tied to the franchise’s anniversary. Wildlands remains accessible through Ubisoft+ Classics and is included for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers, alongside a standalone Definitive Edition bundling the base game with its full slate of prior expansion content.
