Journalists got their first hands-off look at Grand Theft Auto VI this week, and the details coming out of Rockstar North paint a picture of the studio’s most ambitious open world yet — one built around a deeper relationship system, smarter police and a map roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2.
The preview built showed off Vice City and the surrounding Leonida region, with Vice City alone reportedly about twice the size of Los Santos from GTA 5. Rockstar’s research process reportedly involved years of studying Miami, interviewing former criminals, law enforcement and club promoters and contributions from more than 50 real street artists who painted murals throughout the city. The technical leap is significant too: the build previewed featured more than 600,000 animations, compared to roughly 55,000 in GTA 5.
For the first time in the series, GTA 6 puts a couple at its center. Jason and Lucia’s relationship isn’t confined to cutscenes — players can call, text, and meet up in the open world, with their bond strengthening through shared activities like robberies, shopping trips, and general exploration. It’s a structural change that previewers say gives the story a stronger emotional throughline than past entries, even as some note the tone leans more serious than GTA’s traditionally satirical bent, drawing comparisons to crime films like Bonnie and Clyde.
The Wanted system has been overhauled: police now track witness descriptions of a suspect’s actual appearance and vehicle, meaning changing clothes or swapping cars can genuinely throw off pursuers — hollow stars indicate an incomplete identification. Robberies now come with a choice between quick, lower-value scores and slower jobs that pay out more. A new “Criminal Profile” system, similar in spirit to Red Dead Redemption 2‘s honor mechanic, separately tracks gratuitous violence versus mission-required actions.
Beyond the main story, previewers highlighted an enormous slate of side activities: basketball, pool, weightlifting, scuba diving, hunting, base jumping, jet skiing, mini golf, and even a ride-hailing side hustle called “Ryde Me.” Character customization goes deeper too, with exercise and diet affecting muscle and weight, and visible fatigue effects from sleep deprivation. One journalist’s playthrough covering the main story plus optional content reportedly ran around 80 hours.
Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed for November 19, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; a PC release date has not yet been announced.
