Hands-on previews of The Blood of Dawnwalker are painting a picture of one of 2026’s most anticipated dark fantasy RPGs — one built by Witcher 3 veterans, with a branching narrative system reviewers say is refreshingly, sometimes brutally, real.
The Blood of Dawnwalker comes from Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio founded by developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, led by former Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. Published by Bandai Namco and built in Unreal Engine 5, the game is billed as the first chapter in a new RPG saga and launches September 3, 2026, on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Players take on the role of Coen, a young man whose family lives under vampire oppression in a 14th-century Europe ravaged by the Black Death. Early in the story, Coen is transformed into a “Dawnwalker” himself, gaining vampiric powers he must use to protect the people he loves while navigating a world of human enemies, monsters, and morally gray choices.
The game’s defining mechanic is its day/night duality. By day, Coen has standard human abilities and access to tasks that can only be completed in daylight. By night, he gains vampire powers, including wall-scaling and short-range teleportation. Reviewers noted that many environments are specifically designed to be explored in both forms, encouraging players to revisit the same locations with entirely different toolkits — effectively doubling the game’s sense of exploration.
Combat blends Witcher 3-style third-person action with Sekiro-inspired parrying and Zelda-style directional swordplay, built around a four-directional attack-and-block system. On higher difficulty settings, the game strips away UI prompts entirely, forcing players to read enemy movement and timing rather than rely on visual cues. Previewers described the resulting combat as demanding and, at times, “unforgiving” — a deliberate design choice rather than an oversight.
Perhaps the most talked-about system is the game’s strict 30-day in-game timer, which advances only through quest completion rather than passively. Choosing to pursue one mission can permanently lock players out of rival storylines and character relationships, forcing real prioritization rather than the illusion of choice common in many open-world RPGs. In one telling detail from the preview events, separate journalists playing nearly identical three-hour hands-on sessions came away with genuinely different story outcomes — evidence, reviewers say, that the branching narrative has real teeth.
Preview coverage has been largely positive, with several outlets suggesting the game could stand out from typical open-world RPG offerings by pairing narrative depth with meaningfully varied combat. Whether that promise holds up across a full campaign will become clear when The Blood of Dawnwalker launches September 3.
