HBO Announces ‘Baldur’s Gate’ Series Helmed By Co-Creator Of ‘The Last Of Us’ Craig Mazin

HBO officially announced that it was developing a TV show based on the Baldur’s Gate series. Specifically, it will be an original story that picks up after the events of the 2023 smash-hit game Baldur’s Gate 3.

With Baldur’s Gate 3 being the absolute titan in the gaming world that it is – winning over 34 awards, accruing over 15 million lifetime players and being the first game to win Game of the Year at the five major game award shows (the Game Developers Choice Awards, The Game Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, the Golden Joystick Awards and the BAFTAs) – making its sequel is a monumental task.

The show will be helmed by Craig Mazin, co-creator of HBO’s The Last of Us. Mazin will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Other executive producers on the Baldur’s Gate show include Cecil O’Connor, Jacqueline Lesko and Hasbro Entertainment Head of Television Gabriel Marano. Chris Perkins, the former head of story at Hasbro’s subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, will serve as a consultant.

Marano stated, “The fans have been eagerly awaiting an adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, and we could not ask for better partners than HBO and the incomparable Craig Mazin to build this world with.”

Alongside co-creating what many claim to be one of the greatest video game adaptations of all time, Mazin is a massive fan of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the entire Dungeons & Dragons franchise, in general. He is a Dungeon Master who has been playing the game every week for the past 15 years, and he finished Baldur’s Gate 3 on Honor Mode.

Mazin confirmed in a statement:

“After putting nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”

The projected release date for the new series is still to be determined.
