Back in March, HBO announced that it would be working with Sony to bring The Last of Us video game to the television world. Now, months after the announcement, HBO has officially given the green light on the project. In a report from Variety, the website has confirmed with HBO that the studio has ordered a season for the series’s upcoming live-action adaptation. Craig Mazin, creator of the Chernobyl mini-series from HBO, will act as the showrunner for the project and both writer and executive producer. Meanwhile, The Last of Us‘ Creative Director/Writer, Neil Druckman, will also serve as both an executive producer and a writer.
Joining Mazin and Druckman as executive producers are Evan Wells, President of Naughty Dog, Carolyn Strauss, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, with PlayStation Productions, Word Games and Naughty Dog producing the show.
“We’re thrilled to be working with HBO and this fantastic creative team to bring The Last of Us series to life,” Jeff Frost, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, told Variety. “PlayStation’s innovative storytelling and ingenuity is a natural complement to SPT’s creative focus. Our collaboration is a great example of our ‘One Sony’ philosophy at work. We look forward to developing even more iconic game IP in the future.”
Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming, said that this show will appeal to both “die-hard fans of The Last of Us’games and newcomers.” She also added that “We’re delighted to partner with Naughty Dog, Word Games, Sony and PlayStation to adapt this epic, powerfully immersive story.”
No information has yet to be released on who will play protagonists Joel or Ellie in the series.
