The upcoming first-person horror game Martha is Dead will be censored on PlayStation consoles while remaining uncensored on PC and Xbox.
The developers took to Twitter to announce the change, as well as confirm that physical editions of the game will need to be delayed to accommodate the new content.
“It is with regret that we have had to modify the experience on the PS5 and PS4 versions, with some elements no longer playable,” they wrote. “After over four years of passion and work, Developer LKA now requires extra time to make these unplanned changes.”
It is not known what specific content was censored, but it is widely believed to be a scene from the demo of the game that involves violent actions with a corpse. The game features warnings on both its store page and in-game about the type of content players can expect to see.
The announcement drew mixed reactions online, as critics slammed Sony for forcing a developer to change their creative vision after it was already approved by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and two other platforms. Others praised the changes saying that the content in the game went too far.
The developers of the game later announced on Steam that all collectors editions of the game for PlayStation will now include a Steam code for the game, so players can choose which version they would rather play.
This isn’t the first time Sony has censored games on their platforms. They recently censored a scene in Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! that involved a suicide, and have been censoring content involving partial or full nudity of characters for a few years. Most of the censorship seems to be targeted towards smaller developers, with very few AAA titles being censored.
