During the PS5’s most recent presentation, a new game set in the Harry Potter universe was announced, Hogwarts Legacy. Taking place before the original series, the game will cast players as a customizable character and explore the Wizarding World of Harry Potter during the 1800s. While the trailer has garnered a positive reception, some fans are still questioning whether to even buy the game due to creator J.K. Rowling‘s transphobic comments.
Rowling got a lot of criticism when she began tweeting transphobic remarks, including, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.” Recently, Rowling next book, Troubled Blood, revolves around a cisgendered man dressing as a woman to commit murders.
Last week, WB Games support published an FAQ about the upcoming title. In it, WB Games says that Rowling was not involved with Hogwarts Legacy. “J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game; however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World. This is not a new story from J.K. Rowling.” The FAQ also says that while Rowling isn’t involved, she has given her support for the project.
Hogwarts Legacy is to be released in 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
