Legendary Surfer Barton Lynch Launches Surfing Video Game

Surfing video games used to be top the charts as some of the most popular games in the early 2000s, but then the market changed. Developers stopped producing surfing games and the genre all but vanished. Now, legendary Australian surfer Barton Lynch is bringing back surfing to video games in his new release of Barton Lynch Pro Surfing 2022.

“We recognize that there are all types of games people can play and in the same way as surfing is a healthy positive thing in the real world we hope that our game can be that in the digital world,” Lynch wrote in an Instagram post announcing the game.

“We’ve done our very best to replicate what exists and give everyone the chance to be a surfer on the World Tour,” the surfer added.

The game is a mix between a game and a simulation, making it different from previous surf games. Older surf games excluded some of the technical aspects of surfing and waves, making it easier for a nonsurfer to master. While Barton’s game still has a game-like aspect so people who don’t surf can pick it up, it leaves in some of the technical aspects like paddling and duck-diving, to make it more challenging.

He also hinted at future installments, “We’d like to keep building this out and to evolve the space further into its full potential including coaching as we move into future versions.”

Barton Lynch Pro Surfing 2022 is available on Steam Early Access and will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, but the release dates have not been announced yet.
