Populous, a luxury architecture firm, unveiled its plan for a massive new Toronto stadium equipped to host concerts and esports tournaments.
The 7,000-seat arena is due for completion in 2025 with the ground-breaking to begin later this year. While the stadium is still unnamed, the designs debuted by Populous are gaining traction online.
“The design of the theater was neither conceived as a sports arena nor an opera house, rather, a new typology that straddles the two – a state-of-the-art performance venue,” said Jonathan Mallie, Populous’s senior principal. “The theater architecture creates a merger of the old and the new.”
Chris Overholt, CEO of multiple esports franchises and OverActive Media, said soon after, “It has always been our intention to develop a venue and hosting strategy and to build a facility that could not only serve as an iconic home for our two franchises but ultimately emerge as a global hub for major international esport events.”
“We are already in active discussions to attract some of the biggest esport events in the world. This venue will redefine Toronto’s event hosting opportunities in every way,” the CEO added.
