Marvel Rivals players have spent the past few weeks noticing something odd: Loki vanished from Quick Play and Practice modes with no explanation. It wasn’t a bug. The game’s newest character reveal trailer confirms Gorr the God Butcher, the fifty-fourth playable hero to join the roster, and his arrival was the story reason all along — a rare case of a live-service shooter actually following through on a narrative thread instead of just patching it quietly.
Gorr enters the game wielding the All-Black Necrosword, the weapon that defines his identity across Marvel media, from the comics to his live-action turn opposite Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder. His debut caps off the mystery arc that ran through Season 9, and he’ll go live as part of Season 10, which developer NetEase has set for September 11 at 9:00 AM UTC (some earlier datamined leaks pointed to September 10, alongside a Nightcrawler release, though the discrepancy is minor at this point). Like every new hero in Marvel Rivals, Gorr will be available to all players free of charge at launch, with no paywall standing between the roster and anyone who logs in.
The full kit hasn’t been officially detailed yet — NetEase has said complete ability breakdowns are coming in an upcoming “Dev Vision” blog post — but the trailer, dataminers, and pre-release leaks have converged on a fairly clear picture of how he’ll play. Gorr is expected to slot in as a Duelist, Marvel Rivals’ damage-focused role, but with a grounded, close-range identity that sets him apart from the game’s more mobile, ranged damage dealers. Comparisons floating around the community liken his Necrosword attacks to Overwatch’s Reinhardt: slower, heavier, cleaving swings built around punishing anyone who gets caught in range rather than poking from a distance.
Beyond the sword work, Gorr is rumored to summon “living abyss constructs” as a secondary mechanic — battlefield tools that could armor allies, slow enemies, or briefly immobilize them, giving him some crowd-control utility on top of raw damage. A dash-style mobility ability is also expected, a nod to the character’s comic-book speed and flight. The headline piece, though, is his rumored Ultimate: summoning three to four “Black Berserkers,” semi-sentient abyss creatures that aggressively hunt down nearby enemies on their own, adding a pressure element that could reshape team fights the moment it’s activated.
Season 10 isn’t just about the new hero. It arrives with the usual trappings of a Marvel Rivals seasonal reset — a new Battle Pass (sold separately from the free character), a new map, limited-time events, and a fresh costume series for players looking to customize their favorites. It also resets the competitive ladder, dropping every player six ranked divisions from wherever they landed at the end of Season 9.5, meaning even top-tier players will be grinding back up from a lower tier once the season goes live.
For a game that’s built much of its identity on rapid-fire crossovers and a deep bench of Marvel characters, Gorr’s arrival is notable less for the roster addition itself and more for how it was delivered: a mystery seeded weeks in advance, paid off with a reveal trailer, rather than just another patch note.
