Microsoft Confirms ‘Call of Duty’ Will Continue To Release On PlayStation

Microsoft has announced that Call of Duty games will continue to release on PlayStation once its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard is complete.

Microsoft President Brad Smith confirmed that Microsoft intends to keep releasing the games on PlayStation consoles for the foreseeable future.

“To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation through the term of any existing agreement with Activision. And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love,” he said.

Smith also reiterated Microsoft’s plan in an interview on CNBC and also floated the idea of possibly bringing the series to Nintendo consoles.

“Great titles like Call of Duty from Activision Blizzard will continue to be available on the Sony PlayStation,” Smith said. “We’d like to bring it to Nintendo devices, we’d like to bring the other popular titles that Activision Blizzard has, and ensure they continue to be available on PlayStation, and that they become available on Nintendo.”

Call of Duty continues to be a titan of the industry, constantly topping the charts as one of the best-selling video game franchises every year, so removing the games from PlayStation consoles would be a big blow for Microsoft’s main competition in the video game industry. That being said the games constantly sell the most copies on PlayStation, which would mean Microsoft would be risking a substantial amount of revenue by making it exclusive.

Although Call of Duty is confirmed to remain multiplatform, this statement does not go into other Activision franchises, which might end up being exclusives for Microsoft’s gaming platforms.
