After selling around 150 million consoles following its release in 2017, it was only a matter of time before Nintendo dropped a new version.
In January of 2025, Nintendo announced the release of the Switch 2. Fans were eager to place their pre-orders as soon as possible to get their hands on the updated console.
Nintendo fans are counting down the days until they get their Switch, but unfortunately, several pre-orders have been cancelled days before the June 5 release. So far, shoppers from North America and the United Kingdom have spoken up about their issues.
Target, Best Buy and most notably Walmart have been sending cancellation emails to consumers. X user, @leafgamess__, posted on May 30 about the notification they received from Walmart.
Fans have expressed their discontent with the situation on several social media platforms. On the r/switch2 subreddit, a user posted his interaction with a Walmart supervisor. The user claims that the Walmart supervisor told him there was a glitch and that all orders would be fixed in the upcoming hours. After those promises weren’t upheld, he continued to push; a new supervisor explained that orders were cancelled due to a lack of stock.
Other users have reported experiencing similar events, explaining that their orders were cancelled due to alleged payment issues.
Shoppers believe retailers oversold, but there has still been no official statement from Nintendo, Walmart, Target or Best Buy.
This incident has impacted the trust of shoppers, one user on the Walmart subreddit stated, “This isn’t just about a missed console. It’s about trust. It’s about a broken promise and the emotional gut-punch of being so close, only to have it ripped away with no reason and no accountability.”
Fortunately, shoppers have started receiving messages stating that their order has been reinstated and they will soon receive their highly anticipated Switch 2.
