PlayStation Showcase 2021: Highlights & Key Announcements

Sony hosted its first virtual showcase in over a year, the PlayStation Showcase 2021, on Thursday, giving eager fans a look into the future of the PlayStation 5. The event featured updates on previously announced titles, as well as new surprises that nobody saw coming.

Sony started off strong by announcing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake as a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 5. This classic 2003 title will be remade from the ground up to take advantage of the graphical capabilities of modern platforms. This release will also mark the first time the game has ever been available on a PlayStation console. The teaser trailer didn’t feature any gameplay or a release window, but the confirmation of a remake was enough to get fans excited.

Marvel had a large presence at the event announcing two AAA titles based on some of their most popular characters. 2018’s Spider-Man had its highly anticipated sequel announced with a 2023 release window. The trailer confirmed that both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who recently had his own game, will be squaring off against the popular villain Venom in the sequel.

Spider-Man wasn’t the only hero who appeared at the event, as Sony surprised everyone with the announcement of a game based on Wolverine. No details were shared about the title, except for the fact that it is being developed by Insomniac Games, the same studio that created the Spider-Man games and released the critically acclaimed Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart earlier this year.

Square Enix showed off a new trailer for their newest original title Forspoken which will be releasing in Spring 2022. The game is an action RPG that centers around a young woman who is brought into a fantasy world and has to find a way home.

The brand new Project Eve was shown off to the world for the first time. Not much is known about this title, but the trailer garnered interest online for its stylish combat and gorgeous graphics.

Rockstar Games was met with a bit of backlash for the announcement that Grand Theft Auto V Expanded and Enhanced edition will be delayed to March 2022. This edition will mark the third time that Grand Theft Auto V will be released on a generation of video game consoles since its original release on the PlayStation 3 in 2013. Fans of the series are desperate for news about a potential sixth installment in the mainline Grand Theft Auto series, which doesn’t seem to be on the horizon for now.

Sony also took the opportunity to announce the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, as well as feature trailers for previously announced titles such as Gran Turismo 7, Ghostwire: Tokyo and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.

The show finished off on a high note giving us a look at God of War: Ragnarok the long-awaited sequel to 2018’s award-winning title God of War. The trailer showed off both gameplay and story elements, giving players a good idea of what to expect when the game launches next year.
