Rumors Circulate For Possible Nintendo Direct Announcements

Nintendo has announced that they will be airing a new Nintendo Direct on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. EST. As always it’s impossible to know for sure what is going to be shown, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from coming up with some possible ideas.

One rumor that has caught the eyes of many classic Nintendo fans is the possibility that Nintendo 64 games might be added to Switch Online. This rumor comes from a very different source than most on this list, as it comes from the United States government.

Nintendo filed a listing with the FCC for a new game controller. The documents relating to the controllers’ design are confidential but said confidentiality is set to expire on Sept. 24, meaning an announcement is very likely.

Fans assume that this controller will be a Nintendo 64 controller for the Switch, because the model number for the controller is “HAC-043” while the model number for the previously released Super Nintendo controller was “HAC-042.” The timing also matches when Nintendo originally announced that Super Nintendo games would be hitting the platform back in September of 2019.

Earlier this year a rumor of another game that might come swinging onto our consoles made the rounds but ended up fading away after it wasn’t announced at E3. That game is a new entry in the Donkey Kong series.

Rumors began to circulate online that a new Donkey Kong game might be in development by the Super Mario Odyssey team. This rumor was backed up by several sources, including Nintendo Life.

This year is DK’s 40th anniversary, so giving him his first new game since 2014 would be a great way to celebrate it. Normally rumors like this are pretty easy to ignore, but last year similar rumors of a new Paper Mario game and a new Metroid game began circulating online, which resulted in Paper Mario and the Oragami King being released last July and the highly anticipated Metroid Dread getting announced to release on Oct. 8.

Monolith Soft will be one company that everyone has their eyes on during the presentation as fans eagerly await their next announcement. Rumors of a new game in the Xenoblade Chronicles series have been circulating since the beginning of the year. Fans are exciting for what comes next after Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition left fans with an ending that is very much open to being continued.

Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman might have poured some fuel onto the fan-made fire when she mentioned that a new game might be coming soon. While being interviewed on the YouTube channel Din’s Meteorite, Coleman was asked about her role in the Xenoblade series, where she said that she thinks a new game is in development.

Whether Colman had a vision from the monado, or was just taking a shot in the dark, has yet to be seen but regardless the chance of a new entry in the beloved series has fans excited for a possible announcement.

The September 2021 Nintendo Direct will air on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. EST on Nintendo’s YouTube and Twitch channels.
