At the end of 2023, Steam released their annual end of the year charts showcasing their most played and bestselling games of the year. Much to the expectations of the community, Baldur’s Gate 3, as well as Hogwarts Legacy, have top-ranking places in both categories with Lostark and Starfield joining them.
Rather than listing them numerically, the storefront places games in different tiers like Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze for their rankings with Platinum being their top tier. They also have charts for new releases, early access, steam deck, controller and VR games to represent the variety of content that they offer on their platform.
Dominating four of the charts in the platinum tier, Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most successful releases of 2023. Since August 3, the game has sold over 22 million units with the number continuing to rise into the next year. The role-playing game has similarly swept multiple game awards ceremonies, winning six Golden Joystick Awards as well as sweeping The Game Awards in 2023.
Avalanche Studio’s Hogwarts Legacy also had a prominent appearance in the Platinum tier this year, with the game being seen in four categories in the top ranking. Based on J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world of Harry Potter, the game had similar praise from gamers as Baldur’s Gate 3.
Despite rocky reviews, Bethesda’s Starfield had a prominent presence in the Steam charts with it appearing in five categories in the top tier. This is not the studio’s only game that received a place in the tier, as their massively successful title, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, 2018 port to VR was in the platinum tier of their VR games charts alongside Beat Games Beat Saber and Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx.
This year also showed some indie successes making it to the top of the listings, with MINTROCKET’s DAVE THE DIVER and Gaggle Studios’ Goose Goose Duck being prominent in the Gold and Platinum tiers for Steam’s 2023 charts.
