Mario in Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo)
The long-awaited Super Nintendo World will finally open to the public at Universal Studios Japan, starting February 21, 2021. The newest addition to USJ will feature recreations of dozens of beloved Nintendo IP’s, with Super Mario Bros receiving the most attention. Recently, IGN’s Japanese division got inside access to USJ’s upcoming theme park area. In their coverage on Super Nintendo World, IGN Japan said that visitors will “be able to climb a sweeping grand staircase, at the top of which is an enormous, imposing bronze statue of Bowser himself.”
In addition to the recreations of classic locations based on Super Mario Bros, the theme park will also contain a Mario Kart attraction, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge. This ride will promise to “put visitors in the driving seat for a ride that includes AR and projection mapping effects to bring courses from the Mario Kart games to life,” said IGN Japan‘s coverage. Other attraction fans can look forward to are a trophy room, which contains recreations of trophies from the Mario Kart series and a Super Mario Cafe. The latter will have pancake sandwiches based on Mario, Peach and Luigi.
Super Nintendo World was originally supposed to open on June 19 during the Summer 2020 Olympics, but both were put on hold to next year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
