The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been out since May 12, and gamers have managed to uncover one of the biggest secrets ever.
For weeks now, the map has been scoured, shaken and turned upside down for its secrets, lore and easter eggs. One such finding lies within the Depths and has some connection to the past of the franchise.
THIS IS A WARNING: The rest of this article is going to get into potential major spoilers regarding locations and layout within the Depths. If you have not had the chance to explore the region yourself, you will now be reading on at your own risk.
Somewhat early in the game, there are little hints dropped in a few instances. For example, throughout the Depths, you may have noticed that the Shrine locations are often in parallel with the illuminated locations of Lightroots.
You may have also noticed that the Shrine’s name is reflected backward, however, it adds more depth from there. This Reddit thread within r/tearsofthekingdom has recently been organizing these similarities.
The ways that Tears Of The Kingdom follows this theme of mirroring locations extends into other environments and even creatures as well. The Goddess statues on the surface correspond to Bargainer statues in the Depths, and the Grand Mines match the towns above.
While the forests of the surface match up the Depth’s groves, the leviathan skeletons match up with the dark skeletons. Other geographic features such as the large mountains on the surface seem to mirror the cavernous valleys below. It proves to be a nice navigator for gamers having trouble getting their way around here and there, once found out.
It creates a connection between Tears Of The Kingdom and a game in the series’ past. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is that game because it employs the theme of mirrors to the Darkworld. This connection could lead to more story weaving for future content in the series.
The search for secrets is ongoing, and players are sure to find more.
Until then, game on.
