‘The Last Of Us Part 2’ – Enhanced Performance Patch Released

A new “enhanced performance patch” for The Last of Us Part 2 on Playstation 5 has been made available today for free. Playstation made the announcement through a video on their YouTube channel and a post on the Playstation Blog.

Arne Meyer, Director of Communications at Naughty Dog, thanked the community for their “terrific support over the past year” in regards to being nominated for both the BAFTA EE Game of the Year and the Golden Joystick Ultimate Game of the Year. Meyer acknowledged that this update has been “one of the most requested items from our community.”

The new Patch 1.08 will allow players to choose between 30 or 60 fps through the display options on the Playstation 5. The PS 5 has shown itself to be quite proficient in running games at 60 fps, so gamers should have no qualms about the reliability of this feature. This addition is meant as a “compliment” to the “rest of the enhancements that are part of the PS5 backward Compatibility with PS4 games, such as enhanced resolution, faster load times, and more” according to Meyer.

The Last of Us Part 2 was initially released on Playstation 4 in June of 2020 but can be accessed on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility. This is by no means a full overhaul or remaster of the game, but is a welcome improvement in the minds of players. The game was already lauded for its beautiful environment and aesthetics, with this patch adding to the visual excellence of the title.

Digital Foundry managed to test out the patch and found the 60 fps feature to be quite robust. The game stayed locked at 60 fps, except for one instance where it dropped to 57 fps. This is hardly a cause for concern, as it is still miles ahead of the previous graphical power of the game on Playstation 4.

“The team has been digging into the PS5 hardware and the possibilities it unlocks since launch last year and we’re excited about what the future holds. This patch is just the first step of working on the PS5,” wrote Meyer, referring to future updates for the title.
