Naughty Dog is one of the more storied studios under Sony‘s umbrella. The Last of Us Part II, the developer’s next project, has been hotly anticipated; some believe the 2013 original neither demands nor benefits from a continuation, while others are excited to see its deuteragonist Ellie continue her journey. Yesterday, Sony released a new trailer for the game, and its director, Neil Druckmann, opened up in a blog post about it.
Druckmann and his team began working on the Last of Us sequel five years ago. He confessed that an “immense pressure” has been felt by all of them because of how challenging it is to continue from the first game, which was universally praised for its narrative, graphics and gameplay. “We know how much you love this world and its characters — especially Ellie and Joel,” Druckmann writes. “Believe me, we’re fans as well. We love them. Which is why we spent years crafting a game that we feel will do them justice, telling a nuanced story that deals with the core question: how far would you go to exact justice against the people that hurt the ones you love?”
Continuing, he notes how Part II is “Naughty Dog’s most ambitious and longest game in [their] 35 year history,” and it’s a project he’s passionate about. He’s hesitant to discuss the story too much, but comments how the trailer discusses some of what fans can expect. Journalist Alysia Judge, however, is well-aware of how Naughty Dog toys with players’ expectations in their trailers. “Naughty Dog often play with fans’ expectations for the trailer, I feel like we’ll only really know what the sequel is like once we start playing it,” she said.
The Last of Us Part II will arrive on February 21, 2020. Those who wish to display their profound excitement for the third-person shooter may be interested in the $169.99 Collector’s Edition or the $229.99 Ellie Edition.
