‘Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare’ Producer Announces ‘Nerfing’ Update To 757 Shotgun

Activision, the publishing company that produces Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is adding an update that seems to be a tad bit controversial. Multiplayer co-director Joe Cecot admitted that developer Infinity Ward is planning on updating the 757 shotgun. The update includes the reduction of the effectiveness of the 757 shotgun at distance which makes this shotgun so deadly. Shotguns are usually meant to represent the perfect weapon for close-encounters where assault rifles require more rounds and don’t pack-a-punch. The difference between the 757 and other shotguns in the game is the fragmentation tight spread of every shot. The update is not intended to change the character of the shotgun but to simply reduce the effectiveness a little.

This type of update to a weapon is called “nerfing” or “buffing” and is very common in first-person shooters. Nerfing a weapon refers to changing the power and effectiveness to a gun. When a player or company says a gun was nerfed, they’re referring to an update or patch to the game. The term comes from the Nerf toy gun sold at all major stores. The term ‘nerfing a weapon’ suggests taking a real gun and turning it into a toy gun. This reduction of the weapon’s power is where the term Nerf comes from and that is exactly what Activision is doing to the 757 shotgun. It happens to all Call of Duty games when a weapon is overpowered, however, not all players of Modern Warfare will champion this update. For the player who prefers using an assault rifle this update is lovely. For runners who sprint around the map using merely their shotguns and melee, their strategy is now less effective.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launched in October now has more than $600 million in revenue and more is to come. With the first Battle Pass coming in December, that revenue will only increase. As one of the hottest games on the market right now with such a large following, the nerfing of the 757 shotgun is a blow to many players’ tactics and a boost for others. Players will need to take advantage of the 757 shotgun now because the update is imminent and deadly.
