Call Of Duty: Vanguard’s Game File To Be Smaller Than Earlier Games

Activision has revealed that the new Call of Duty: Vanguard will not take up as much space on your hard drive as earlier games in the series.

In a tweet, Activision says it’s employing on-demand texture streaming to cut down Call of Duty: Vanguard’s file size by an estimated 30-50% on PC and new-gen consoles. This is surprisingly good news as earlier games in the franchise have file sizes as big as 231 gigabytes of memory, such as the case with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

But having such a robust game size is not a surprise for the Call of Duty franchise. Each game features a strong single-player campaign, plenty of multiplayer modes and maps and, of course, an army’s worth of guns. With this much content, it may require a whole lot of hard drive space ─ more than the vast majority of modern games. The most recent mainline Call of Duty, 2020’s Black Ops Cold War, ate more than 130GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch. To compare, Cyberpunk 2077 came out the same year and only weighed in at 33.6 gigabytes.

It’s worth pointing out that the tweet says that download sizes will be smaller on current-gen consoles and PC. Xbox Series X, PS5 and PC players will be able to enjoy the compressed file sizes, but players on Xbox One and PS4 may still be looking at an enormous download.

But now, thanks to some advanced new tech that apparently streams some textures instead of storing them on your hard drive, Call of Duty: Vanguard won’t be quite as much of a hog as its predecessors, at least when it comes to PC and new-gen consoles.

If Call of Duty: Vanguard does indeed come as advertised, with a somewhat modest download size, it will be interesting to see how much it will increase with all the day-one DLC’s and future content that gets added to the game.
