Director Chris McKay Says ‘Nightwing’ Is Not Cancelled

The making of Nightwing was first reported back in 2017. Warner Bros. wanted to expand the DC Extended Universe with Batman’s first Robin, Dick Grayson, who has rarely been featured in movies. However, after four years of waiting, no updates of Nightwing were revealed, leaving people wondering if the movie is delisted from the production.

In response to the rumor, Chris McKay, the director of Nightwing, discussed the status of the movie to The Bear Cave. “No one has told me we’re not making that movie. It’s just right now; they have other priorities,” he said. “A lot of their plans have had to change and change again. They’ve gone through a lot of stuff, and when I was brought in to Nightwing, they were in the process of doing Matt Reeves’ The Batman, so he was starting his thing there.”

McKay also expressed that he had “a lot of hope” about directing the movie. Even though the expansion of the DC Extended Universe is currently not the main focus, “they still want to make a Nightwing movie something I think is still important to them.”

Another burning question from fans is whether the film will feature Ben Affleck’s Batman, considering Zack Snyder’s Justice League just stirred a sensation among DC fans. However, McKay answered it with utmost uncertainty. “There was still some stuff that was needed to be determined of what that was going to look like,” he said.

One thing we know for sure is that even if Batman shows up in the movie, he won’t be taking over that much of the story arc. It’s “like you were picking up a Nightwing comic. You’re not guaranteed Batman was going to show up, but he could show up and other people could show up, but again you’re dealing with Nightwing and that’s what I like about it,” the filmmaker said.

As the director disclosed, the movie would be heavily centered upon revenge, and there would be a lot of villains along Dick Grayson’s dreadful journey. That being said, we don’t really know when we’ll actually see Dick Grayson’s debut in movies.
