While PlayStation and Xbox Owners were able to get their hands on a physical copy of Doom Eternal (even within the midst of a global pandemic), owners of the Nintendo Switch are out of luck. While the original Doom fit on a cartridge, the upcoming Switch version of Doom Eternal will only be available as a digital download. On November 19, IGN received reports from consumers that GameStop was canceling pre-orders of Doom Eternal. The website then reached out to Bethesda, Doom Eternal’s publisher, and a spokesperson from the company told them that while the Nintendo Switch version of Doom Eternal was not canceled, it will now be released as a digital download.
“While Doom Eternal is 100% on track for an imminent digital-only release on Nintendo Switch, the absence of a physical release at retail resulted in canceled pre-orders,” read the statement. “Affected customers will receive full refunds and should contact their preferred retailer for more information.” No reason as to why Bethesda abandoned a physical release for Doom Eternal on the Nintendo Switch, but the company says that more information would arrive later this month.
Doom Eternal was released on March 20, 2020, for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game will arrive on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia and Nintendo Switch, but an official release date has not been given for those versions. Players who purchased Doom Eternal on PS4 and Xbox One will receive the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions for free.
