The work-in-progress mod for Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout: Nuevo México, has sadly been canceled after four years in the making due to the workload and costs of the project becoming unsustainable for the development team.
On Jan. 27, the lead project designer for Nuevo México posted the announcement on the project’s official Discord, informing fans that the project has been canceled. “I know this isn’t the kind of news you were expecting to see today and trust me, it’s not easy for me to write this either,” he writes. “After a lot of reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to CANCEL – Fallout: Nuevo México.”
The project leader, simply nicknamed Mr. Doe on the server, goes on to explain how he has no regrets about working on this project, but that “continuing forward simply isn’t sustainable.” He noted, “This project has been my passion, my obsession, and a huge part of my life for years. I’ve poured thousands of hours into it, late nights, early mornings, and everything in between. I’ve met amazing people along the way… Some of the best moments of my life have been spent bringing this world to life, and I’ll always be proud of the work we accomplished.”
Despite having an intense passion for this project, Mr. Doe and the rest of the small team simply could not continue the project with other factors at hand. He elaborated, “I need to prioritize my mental health and face reality. The team is small (less than 4), the workload enormous, and the costs ahead, both financial and personal, are too great.”
Though this has undoubtedly been a tough goodbye for the entire Fallout: Nuevo México team, no matter how small, Mr. Doe ends his announcement with a heartfelt extension of gratitude to the Fallout community for supporting their endeavors while they lasted.
